The Jade Plant (Crassula ovata) is a hardy succulent that thrives beautifully outdoors in warm climates. With its thick, fleshy green leaves and strong woody stems, it develops into a compact, shrub-like plant when grown outside. Native to South Africa, Jade Plants are drought-tolerant and well-suited for balconies, terraces, patios, and garden landscapes.When placed outdoors in the right conditions, the Jade Plant grows faster, develops stronger stems, and may even produce delicate star-shaped white or pink flowers during cooler months. Its sculptural appearance makes it an excellent choice for outdoor décor and low-maintenance landscaping.
Plant Care (Outdoor):
1. Light:
Place the plant in bright sunlight. It prefers 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Morning sun is ideal. In extremely harsh summer heat (especially North Indian summers), provide light afternoon shade to prevent leaf burn.
2. Watering:
Water thoroughly but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry out completely between watering. During monsoon, ensure excess rainwater drains out to prevent root rot.
3. Soil:
Use well-draining sandy or succulent soil. Good drainage is essential, especially for outdoor pots exposed to rain.
4. Temperature:
Ideal temperature range is 18°C to 32°C. Protect the plant from frost and temperatures below 10°C. In colder regions, move it indoors during winter.
5. Humidity:
Jade Plants tolerate dry outdoor conditions well. Avoid excessive humidity or prolonged wet conditions.
6. Fertilization:
Feed with a diluted balanced fertilizer or succulent fertilizer once every 6–8 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
7. Pruning & Maintenance:
Prune lightly to maintain shape and encourage branching. Remove damaged or soft stems immediately, especially during rainy season.
8. Repotting:
Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its container. Choose a slightly larger pot with drainage holes.
